Get A Move On: Nevada's In-Migration Eased Up In 2022

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that net migration into Las Vegas (people moving in compared to people moving out), totaled 20,781 in 2022 - or 1.0 percent. That compares to recent years with in-migration surges of nearly 50,000 (2019). Still, Nevada was one of 26 states (including Washington D.C.) with net in-migration, and one of 32 to gain population. Notably, California - traditionally one of the most popular states for inbound moves experienced hefty out-migration, with 343,230 more people leaving than arriving. It also registered a net population loss of 0.3 percent. In-migration was topped by Florida, at 318,855. Change-of-address data from the U.S. Postal Service shows the Las Vegas - Paradise metro area with an inbound move rate of 52.2 percent. Related information from United Van Lines shows that family was the No. 1 reason (31.01 percent) their customers moved into Nevada, followed by work (25.58 percent) and retirement (24.81 percent) reasons. On the flip side, family was also the top reason for moving out (40.60 percent), followed by work (27.82) and retirement (13.53).

Now VS. Before The Pandemic

While housing is the main reason people move, data shows that housing-related moves rose even further due to the pandemic. For example, 46% of the moves were made for housing- related reasons in 2021, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This is an increase of 6 percentage points from the previous year. Based on the data, this increase was primarily due to people looking for a better neighborhood, cheaper housing, and the desire for a newer/better/larger home. With the pandemic changing buyers' preferences, these migration trends only go one way and affect every area's demographics.
